Syria

West of the Jabal an Nusayreyah, Syria has a Mediterranean influenced climate, characterized by long, hot and mostly dry summers and mild, wet winters. Yearly rainfall ranges from about 300 - 500 mm in the coastal area, from about 200 mm further inland around Damascus, and from 127 mm to less than 25 mm in the desert area in the southeast. Regional variations in temperature are comparatively slight, due to the relatively small size of the country.

At Aleppo, in the northwest, the average August temperature is about 30&debg;C and the average January temperature is 4°C. At Tudmur, in the central region at the edge of the Syrian Desert, the corresponding temperatures are slightly higher; 31°C in summer and 7°C in the winter months. The differences between day temperatures and night temperatures can be quite significant, especially in the dryer inland areas, where the nights can be surprisingly cool.

Required clothing:
Lightweight Cotton clothes are advised in the summer, with a sweater for cooler evenings, especially in the inland areas. waterproof mediumwear is recommended for the winter.
